Writing Resources

Along with providing tutoring and presentation services, the WRC website includes resources for you to use at home. Click the links below or scroll down to read about our online resources.

Writing Handouts

Some of our clients want some extra help with grammar-related concerns. Our tutors can help you practice American English grammar during face-to-face tutoring sessions, but the best way to improve is to also practice between sessions at home. We’ve compiled a list of writing handouts that can help you become more confident with specific grammar rules.

For a complete list of handouts to practice English grammar, visit our Writing Handouts page.

Avoiding Plagiarism

The WRC takes UNC Charlotte’s academic integrity policy very seriously. All of our tutors are experienced with specific citation styles and documentation practices. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about plagiarism, or help you practice citing sources so you can be more confident when writing.

For more information on what plagiarism is and how to avoid it, visit our Avoiding Plagiarism page.

Style Guides and Documentation

All WRC tutors are experienced with specific citation styles and documentation practices. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about plagiarism, or help you practice citing sources so you can be more confident when writing. If you’re unsure which citation style to use for an academic paper, ask your instructor for guidance.

We’ve compiled a list of online style guides for each of the four most common documentation styles: APA, CMS/Turabian, IEEE, and MLA. That way, you can easily access everything you need to cite your sources—all in one place.

For more information on style guides and documentation, visit our Style Guides and Documentation page.

Editing and Proofreading

Our goal is to help teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, proofread, and edit on your own. We want you to become a better writer by learning how to improve the quality of your writing overall, not just to improve the quality of one specific paper. We’ve compiled a list of online resources for editing and proofreading at home.

For more information on editing and proofreading, visit our Editing and Proofreading page.

English Language Learners (ELLs)

Scheduling a face-to-face appointment at the WRC is a great way to help you learn to write in American English. We may also help you understand how the format and style of writing in American English differs from your native language or country. This process takes time. We encourage you to make weekly appointments where you can work with a tutor to set reasonable goals for developing as a writer at UNC Charlotte.

For more information about ELLs, or to check out our list of online resources for ELLs, visit our English Language Learners (ELLs) page.
